What are the benefits to participants?

Those in groups 2, 3 and 4 will be receiving extra information and support around some of the most difficult to deal with issues (sleep, feeding and activity) in bringing up young children. You might be in the group that will help your baby develop good sleeping patterns. Or you might be in the group who receives fun interactive ideas for being active with your baby. Or you might have a lactation consultant available to help you breastfeed your baby successfully. Although you can’t choose which group you get into, all groups offer additional support and assessment.

Many of these issues are dealt with by current Well Child providers e.g. Plunket, but it is not clear whether the extra time (yours and ours) and cost in providing this support makes any difference. This study will show us if extra support has enough value for parents, then the government should fund it routinely.

We hope you will support this important work, which could improve all New Zealanders’ health and we look forward to working with you.

What are the potential risks?

There are none that we know of. In the unlikely event of a physical injury as a result of participation in this study, participants will be covered by the accident compensation legislation.
